Allergy Sufferers, Are Dust Mites Ruining Your Life?

Do your eyes itch? Your nose stop up and start dripping? Your lungs burn and make a wheezing sound when you breath? If you suffer from allergies, you probably answered yes to one or more of these miserable conditions.

I won’t take up a lot of your time explaining what exactly allergies are and how they affect our systems because if you’re here answering yes to one or more of the questions above, you already know what what allergies are. You want to know what you can do to make yourself feel better and be as allergy free as possible.

Here you will find some steps you can take to help make your home environment as allergy free as possible.

Use Your Central Heating and Air Conditioning

Of all the things you can do to help fight allergies, Air conditioning your home is right at the top of the list, especially those two real nasties, mold and dust mites. Running your A/C keeps the humidity down which helps control mold and dust mites. Filtering the air catches even more of the microorganisms that affect your allergies, so don’t cut corners when it comes to buying a good a/c filter.

Opening your windows may sound like a good way to bring “fresh” air into your home but in reality, you are creating an enviroments exactly like what is outdoors, one full of pollens.

SIDE STORY: Does it seem like more people suffer from allergies than the generations before us? You may not be wrong. Since the advent of the vacuum and central heating & air, we have unknowingly created a more friendly environment for our little friends, the dust mites. Once, families gathered around the fire to keep warm and took the throw down rugs outside to beat out the dust frequently, now many of us enjoy wall to wall carpeting and maintain our homes at a warm, comfy temperature throughout the winter months essentially creating an oasis for these organisms.

Roll Up Your Cars Windows While Driving

If sitting out on your patio makes your eyes start watering from the pollen, imagine your patio chair moving through clouds of pollen at 60mph. With the price of gas, many of us may be trying to save a buck where we can but don’t do so at the detriment of your health.

Install A Professional Air Filtration System

Installing a commercial quality air filtration system directly to your homes a/c could be just what the doctor ordered for you. While you could run down to your local drug store and buy one, the quality and efficiency is not going to have any real impact on your health. They do remove particles from the air but they also move just as much around because of their size.

Dry It Up

Using a good dehumidifier to keep your homes humidity level below 45% can help control dust mites, pet dander, pollens and molds which generally prefer the more moist environments. If you or someone else in your home is sensitive to the drier than normal air, try placing a small humidifier near their bed.

Wipe It Up

No need for expensive, exotic chemicals flown half way around the world to tackle the cleaning. A quick trip to your favorite shopping center to pick up a bottle of Clorox and you’re ready to go. Just follow the directions on the bottle to mix a solution powerful enough to wipe out entire civilizations of mold and other unseen nasties.

Lock It Up

Pet owners are at a disadvantage because there is no way we would want to give them away yet those sensitive to pet dander can suffer from the very love and attention we give and receive from our pets. The answer to this is to create a safe haven out of your bedroom. You spend at least 8 hours a day there and you want to get your much needed rest in a dander free environment.

Cover It Up

Normal household chores is a double edged sword for those suffering from allergies. You need to keep your environment clean but the very act of cleaning itself can expose you to large amounts of dust and other unseen nasties. Get yourself a good, high quality mask to wear when you are cleaning or doing anything else that might expose you such as gardening.

Hire A Professional Cleaner

Or even a not so professional cleaner. If you are severely allergic to dust and the pollens which collect in your home, it may be a wise investment to hire a cleaning service or a neighborhood teenager that would like to earn a little extra money. You can safely go out and watch a movie or take care of other business while avoiding a miserable allergic reaction.

Seal It In Plastic

I won’t even share with you the actual figures of what can live in your mattress or pillows, it would probably put you in shock right this second. Sealing your mattress and pillow in plastic can provide a protective barrier between you and that which we will not speak of.

Yank It Up

If you are a serious allergy sufferer, it may be time to yank the carpet up and put down hardwood or tile instead. Your carpeting probably covers the majority of your home and contains zillions of allergy causing material, removing your carpet is a huge step and a necessary one for those who suffer greatly and who have tried the other methods for maintaining a healthier home environment to no avail.

Note: Before you decide to run out and rent a steam cleaner or call someone in, you should know that steam cleaners just don’t get hot enough to effectively eliminate dust mites, quite the contrary, the steam actually creates a warmer, damper environment which the dust mites thrive in and will thank you for.

Lay Them Down

Replacing your carpet and adding throw rugs instead can be a huge benefit for you serious allergy sufferers. Dust mites need the warm, moist environments to survive and just can’t continue to exist on polished, dry, hard floors. Your rugs can be shook off outside by your cleaning service or neighborhood teen or they can even be washed at temperatures that are hot enough to kill the mites unlike steam cleaning.

use Washable, Synthetic Material Pillows

Hopefully, you have either purchased the plastic wrap for your pillow or are planning to do so soon but before you hop in the car, roll the windows up and crank the a/c, you should take a look at your pillows tags to see what material they’re made of. Dust mites don’t actually care whether your pillow is full of fluffy goose feathers or some synthetic material, they’ll feel right at home in either. However, with a synthetic material like Dacron or Hollofil, you can wash them in hot water which is sure to spoil the dust mites day.

Wash Your Mattress Pad Weekly

Once a week, you will want to wash your mattress pad and if you’re feeling industrious, go ahead and wash your sheets and blankets as well. Or call your favorite cleaning service or neighborhood kid that’s been taken care of things for you and go enjoy a nice lunch and an afternoon at the movies.
